Shenzhen's Futuristic Museum of Contemporary Art and Planning Exhibition
Shenzhen, China's modern metropolis and innovation hub, is home to one of the most impressive cultural landmarks in the country: the Museum of Contemporary Art and Planning Exhibition (MOCAPE). This colossal structure, designed by Austrian architecture firm Coop Himmelb (l)au, combines two independent yet structurally unified institutions: the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and the Planning Exhibition (PE).
The MOCAPE is part of the master plan for the Futian Cultural District, the new urban center of Shenzhen, and occupies a site of 80,000 square meters. The building's exterior is a dynamic surface of natural stone louvers and insulated glass, which creates a multifunctional facade that reflects the changing light and weather conditions. The interior features a soaring lobby with a cloud-like mirrored installation that connects the exhibition spaces of both museums with bridges and ramps.
The MOCAPE aims to provide a cultural meeting point and a venue for architectural exhibitions, as well as a platform for public events, education, and research. The museum hosts various temporary exhibitions with an emphasis on contemporary art and design, showcasing local and international artists and designers. The museum also offers a range of facilities for visitors, such as a cafe, a bookstore, a museum store, an auditorium, a conference room, and a library.
The MOCAPE is open from 10am to 5pm from Tuesday to Sunday, and the admission fee is 20 yuan per person. The museum is easily accessible by public transportation, as it is located near the Shenzhen Civic Center metro station. For more information, visit the museum's official website at https://www.mocape.org/.
